Madagascar is an island country in the Indian Ocean, approximately 400 kilometres (250 miles) off the coast of East Africa across the Mozambique Channel. Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot; over 90% of its wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth.
Grown in Madagascar, organic raffia boasts the biggest leaves of any plant in the world. The island is home to around 170 palm species
, three times as many as on all of mainland Africa. 165 of them are endemic. Many native plant species are used as herbal remedies and drugs used for treating cancer and a variety of afflictions.
Madagascar’s natural resources are many and include a variety of agricultural and mineral products. Agriculture (including the growing of raffia), mining, fishing and forestry are mainstays of the economy. In 2017 the top exports were vanilla, nickel metal, cloves, knitted sweaters and cobalt. Madagascar is the world’s principal supplier of vanilla, cloves and ylang-ylang.
The island supplies 80% of the world’s natural vanilla. Other key agricultural resources include coffee, lychees and shrimp.
Key mineral resources include various types of precious and semi-precious stones, and it currently provides half of the world’s supply of sapphires!
How Raffia Is Harvested
Harvesting raffia is as sustainable as you can get- trim back a leaf, and it’ll grow back in the same place. There’s no need to cut down this plant, so its a fantastic hat, bag, accessories and home decor material without contributing to deforestation.
From the rainforests of Madagascar, raffia is the most sustainable type of palm used for hat making. The raffia is harvested with government structured time limits to allow other plants to grow and protect the flora and fauna. Harvesting is from the underside of the Raffia Palm and the palms can grow up to 60 or 80 ft.
They can be harvested easily with no damage to the plant itself and no need for harmful pesticides or herbicides so the raffia hat or finished product is made from an organic and sustainable fibre.
Raffia is an amazing material. To make hats after the harvest the dyeing takes place, then the weaving or crocheting of the designs. The raffia does not dry out and is pliable to make many different items. The weaving of raffia and other local plant materials has been used to create a wide array of practical items such as floor mats, baskets, purses and hats.
Hippie Fish raffia hats are made in stylish, fun designs but also offer good protection from the sun’s harsh rays so you can be outside doing what you love for longer.
